The Gambia, also known as The Smiling Coast, is situated on the Atlantic coast, with its sandy beach coastline, vast wildlife and energetic nightlife, it is a must visit for families, couples and friends.

Why the West Coast?

We might be a little biased, but we really do feel that the West Coast gives visitors the chance to see and feel the real Gambia.

  • En route to Kololi Beach Resort is the Bijilo forest, home to the Red Colobus & Green Vervet monkey species.
  • The Gambia boasts over 500 species of Birds, with various habitats, some of which can be seen daily enjoying the Kololi grounds.
  • Our beach is simply one of the best in The Gambia, if not West Africa, or quite possibly the world.
  • Taking a trip up country on the river, away from the main tourist area is the home to Chimpanzees, hippos, crocodiles, baboons, bush babies and smaller reptiles such as monitor lizards and many species of snakes, including the Green Mamba.
  • The Gambia, known as the 4th friendliest countries in the world.
  • The time zone is GMT+1 so no major jet lag for European travellers – which means no wasted recovery time during your stay or on your return jourmey home.

A year-round holiday destination – with 9 months (October – June) of blue skies, sunshine and cool evening breezes, The Gambia is the perfect destination for any traveller wanting a tropical beach holiday without the long-haul flights. July – September tropical rains become miraculous downpours and electrifying storms. These tropical storms tend to only last a few hours each day.

The below charts show temperate, ocean temperature and daily sunshine over a 12-month period forecasted from Banjul, just 10 miles from Kololi Beach Resort.

Local Favorites

Legendary and skilled Artisans are plentiful, and bartering is welcome when visiting any market - When visiting these markets, we would suggest taking a guide with you as the markets are very big and easy to get lost in.

If you would like to try some of the local cuisine, these are the four main traditional dishes that we highly recommend introducing your taste buds too.

  • Benachin – ‘The One Pot Wonder’ Rice cooked with meat or fish and vegetables, tomatoes, onions and of course chilli.
  • Domoda – Aka. The Peanut Butter Stew.  Meat stewed in peanut puree and served with rice. (the least spicy)
  • Superkanja – A super soup with a mix of okra, fish or meat, palm oil, onions and pepper boiled together.
  • Yassa – Super spicy Chicken, Fish or Meat cooked with fresh lime, onions and ground black pepper.

Kololi Area

Kololi Beach Resort is in the heart of the Senegambia tourist region. With the newly completed conference centre next door, the Bijilo National Forest that takes just 5 minutes’ walk/cycle, as well as the lively Senegambia tourist ‘strip’ just 1-minute walk from Resort ; you will have the benefit of enjoying the relaxation of Kololi Resort as well as the convenience of the surrounding areas.

Wild Gambia

The Gambia is endowed with a rich array of wildlife, you can spot hippos in areas such as River Gambia National Park. The 5 islands that make up this Park are also known as ‘Baboon Islands’. Other species found in these areas include; chimpanzees, adorable bush babies & red tapas monkeys, crocodiles, baboons, aardvarks, hyenas and many more amazing species. Despite being the smallest of African countries, it boasts a diverse bird population comprising over 550 species – no wonder this is a Bird lovers paradise.

Bijilo forest & nature trail (5 minutes’ drive from Kololi Resort) comprises primarily of a closed canopy forest that protects a wide range of mammals, reptiles and invertebrates. The two main monkey species found here are the Green Vervet and Western Red Colobus. The Red Colobus was very rarely seen and was known to be shy – over recent years due to deforestation they are seen regularly in the surrounding areas including Kololi Beach Resort. As tempting as it is, we do advise that people are cautious and do not feed the monkeys as they can become very cheeky & sometimes aggressive.

The Reptile Farm is located at Kartong about an hour’s drive away, where they have many species of snakes, turtles/tortoises, crocodiles. Collated The reptile farm is set up not as a zoo but as an educational facility to provide more knowledge to locals and tourists alike, as most locals for several reasons find snakes to be bad luck. They encourage you to get up close and personal with some of the friendlier reptiles, maybe a little closer than you would like but you can always watch from afar.

If crocodiles are your thing, then Calypso Bar & Restaurant will be right up your street. Located on the Eastern end of Cape point, Calypso offers an indoor bar area, but most prefer to sit outside by the natural pool, under thatched cabanas where you can overlook the ocean and escape reality.
